Forms of ADL training
- Self-care training: Occupational therapists from Heimphysio support you at home to make activities such as washing, dressing or brushing your teeth easier and safer. The aim is to promote independence in personal routines in everyday life.
- Household activities: During the Heimphysio home visit, everyday tasks such as cooking, tidying up or laundry are practiced together. In this way, you gain confidence in your familiar surroundings and can manage the household independently again.
- Mobility training: We use targeted movement exercises to promote your stability, balance and safety in everyday life. The training helps you to move safely again within your own four walls and in your daily environment.
- Adaptation of the living environment: Our occupational therapists will advise you on how small changes – such as grab rails, non-slip mats or adapted furniture – can make your everyday life easier and create more safety at home.

Risks during ADL training
Depending on your physical condition and resilience, ADL training can lead to slight, temporary reactions. These include, for example, sore muscles, tiredness or a feeling of tension after the exercises. In some cases, movements can cause short-term pain if unfamiliar muscle groups are activated or restricted joints are strained.
Dizziness or circulatory problems can also occur if the training is started too intensively or the circulation is not yet accustomed to the strain. These reactions are usually harmless and subside after a short time. It is important to take breaks, pay attention to your own body and gradually increase your training to avoid overloading yourself.
Preparation and follow-up of ADL training
Before ADL training
Before you start an ADL training session, a few simple preparations can help make the session enjoyable and effective. Make sure you are well rested and in a quiet environment. Wear comfortable clothing that allows freedom of movement and avoid physically strenuous activities immediately beforehand. Keep the environment free of distractions and - if necessary - provide aids such as non-slip mats, chairs or everyday objects that are used during training. Avoid heavy meals or excessive caffeine consumption shortly before the appointment. Bring relevant medical documents or prescriptions and inform your occupational therapist about any current complaints, pain or changes in your everyday life. Conscious preparation helps you to concentrate better and implement the exercises in a targeted manner.
After ADL training
After an ADL training session, it is important to pay attention to your body's signals. Slight muscle tension, a pulling sensation or temporary tiredness are normal reactions to the activation and movement during the session. These sensations show that your muscles and joints are responding to the training. However, if you experience severe pain, dizziness or persistent discomfort beyond 48 hours, please contact your occupational therapist or a doctor. You should avoid major physical exertion in the first few hours after training. Allow yourself sufficient rest, but continue to perform gentle movements to support blood circulation and mobility. Make sure that you neither cool down nor overheat - therefore avoid very hot baths, saunas or intensive cold applications directly after training. A pleasant room temperature and a comfortable position promote regeneration. Drink plenty of water to support your circulation and metabolism. You can gently repeat light stretching or movement exercises that you have learned during training after a short rest period to consolidate the training effect and promote the healing process.
